Welcome to the Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye Dakhóta language recordings and writings webpage. The Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye created this audio database to provide Dakhóta language learners a resource to hear Dakhóta speech from Dakhóta speakers. Each recording is posted with a written transcription.
Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye created this project as one of several resources to foster language growth amongst Dakhóta language learners. Hearing the language spoken is critical to language growth. In Dakhóta society elders are often the teachers. Unfortunately, many learners now are not able to hear the language spoken from elders. The recordings made available seek to connect the learner to the speaker.
Language learning from audio has several advantages, and should be utilized by dedicated learners. Individual pace can be set, review can occur when convenient, and focus on certain areas of speech is possible through the recording. This review is difficult in person without interruption, or clarifying questions during dialogue. A database can also provide examples of distinct geographic variants within the Dakhóta language.
